Although queer people have been more accepted by society, many big organizations, especially the religious ones, still shun them out. It is because of this that queers are often bullied when they are younger and grossly discriminated in society when they grow up. Due to this, these people would end up with some mental conditions such as depressive tendencies, or even worse, suicidal tendencies.
With this type of issue now being talked about, one of the most important things to help with this would be therapy and intervention. Now, in order for these sessions to help, it is very important to understand what goes on in these sessions. When the counselor would speak with the client or patient, the counselor will allow them to just start talking about anything regarding how they feel and what they think.
As stated above, the first step of these sessions would be to gain rapport and this is done so that they can start feeling more comfortable about opening up. If they realize that there is actually someone who is willing to listen to them, then they will be able to let out their feelings. It also helps the counselor have a better idea of the struggles of his patient.
Most of these people just need someone who can listen to them and someone who will not judge. With this, counselors will just let them talk and also affirm them from time to time. This is to allow them to let out any tension or feelings that they have been harboring all this time while keeping quiet.
It is through this that the counselors are now able to bring up some solutions for self improvement and positive feelings. This is one of the more delicate parts of the process wherein the counselor will try to change the mindset of these people. So no matter what negative mindsets one may have, it can change.
Another thing that counselors would do is that they would be working with psychologists to check if these patients would have any more deeper mental conditions. A counselor will not be able to diagnose for any mental conditions like depression or anxiety. It is only through the help of a psychologist and some psychological testing that one will be able to determine any mental issues or conditions.
These efforts are done so that people from the LGBTQ group who have been bullied and ostracized before can have a happier life. These people do have it hard because they are not usually accepted by society. Even through all this hardship, counseling will be able to help these people develop more confidence and happiness.
