Start by getting recommendations. Friends and colleagues are always good at providing leads. If you are stuck and you do not know what to do, just talk to a few people you can trust. You will be surprised by the amount of help you will receive. Moreover, they may be familiar with your case as a result of a past experience and they may have just the right number for you.
Ask for recommendations from another lawyer. Well, this is the best place to ask for help. If you have a lawyer you have worked with before and you liked them, they could help you get the right person if they are not in that field. Since they are in the same industry, they should know the who is who of the legal profession.
Find a professional enlisted with the State Bar Association. Most state bars have a program where people can search for lawyers based on the areas on which they practice and their expertise. The advantage this offers is that if a particular individual has a disciplinary issue or has been disbarred, you will know even before you hire them.
Search the internet. If you are too busy in the office and you do not have time to hit the road and knock on a few offices, then make use of your PC or smartphone. Just search for the type of lawyer you are looking for and remember to specify your location. This will ensure that you only get feedback for local attorneys.
Come up with a list of at least five individuals. You do not want to hire the first person you come across without knowing how they fare against the others. Hence, take time and call these individuals one at a time and get more information about them. This way, you will be able to narrow the names to just two or even one.
Check the reputation of the lawyers you want to hire. Unless you check with the state bar association, you may not know if a lawyer is facing a disciplinary action. In addition, they could also be having several complaints from their clients. You can check their websites or independent sites to get reviews about them.
Choose someone who is available. Do not go for a lawyer who is too busy. Being busy is good because it indicates that they have cases to work on, so they have a stream of clients. However, they should be able to dedicate adequate time to each case.
Meet in-person. Do not hire someone you have not met with. When you meet, check their presentation. You should feel comfortable around them. They should value you as a client and you should feel that they respect you as well.
