The Difference Between Life Transitions Coaching And Counseling

By Sarah Wallace

While professional counseling can often be of assistance with anxiety and depression, a coach is often more suited toward dealing with life issues. When it comes to Life Transitions Coaching, most individuals are facing major changes such as a long distance move, new relationship, marriage or divorce. In addition, coaches in this area can also assist individuals in meeting a goal or goals by providing ongoing support and motivation.

The term coaching often refers to two individuals who work together in which one has more experience and expertise than the other in a specific area. For example, those whom teach on the job training, lead workshops, coach sports teams and educators are all considered coaches. In most cases, coaching only last for a specified period of time, while counseling can often be a life long process.

While many people think life coaches are a fairly new idea, different types of coaching have been around since the 1830s at Oxford University. In the earliest days, the term coach was used as slang in relation to a tutor who helped students through the exam process. As a result, the term now identifies people which can take an individual from where one is now in life and where one wants to be.

Whether assisting individuals with personal development, leading workshops, participating in movements such as est, the laws of attraction, the Human Potential Movement, adult education and positive thinking. In most cases, these individuals assist people in achieving a specific goal or goals and completing projects.

In one sense, life coaches have a meta-profession which extends to assisting clients in spiritual direction, political affiliations, family, social scenes and networking, careers and professions, personal issues and health concerns. While there may be some overlap of different client needs, ethnicity, culture and history can also effect the style and type of coaching which may be needed at any given time.

One area in which a coach is more appropriate than a psychological counselor is in relation to marriage and relationships. For, while there are marriage counselors whom work with couples having issues during a marriage or relationship, coaches often work with couples before tying the knot to assure that both parties are on the same page with regards to business, careers, children, lifestyle, monogamy versus non-monogamy, residential locations, retirement and other issues.

Other issues which can often require coaching include separation due to job or career, military spouses, divorce, especially those in which children or property are involved and personal items. In all cases, coaches need to work with clients to determine the best path forward which is beneficial to all parties. In the case of divorce, it is also important that the couple play an active role in making these decisions be there a coach involved or otherwise.

Ultimately transition coaching in this area includes all areas such as business, career, family, marriage, relationship and spiritual matters. While this is the case, individuals most often focus on one specific area when it comes to coaching while counseling is generally inclusive of problems in all areas. In either case, when an individual needs assistance during a major transition, or just to have an ear to listen during difficult times, a coach can often provide a great deal of insight, information and support.
