Most florists do not have any special academic qualifications because it is not a requirement in this field. No academic standards have been set by the government in any jurisdiction. One has to have good business skills, a passion for floral designs, and the heart to do the manual work involved and they are good to work. As one gains more clients, they can employ other florists to assist with the most of the manual work while they handle other tasks.
Floral arranging did not originate from any specific country. As such, various countries have their own approaches to arranging flowers to make flower patterns. Some of the factors that determine the style of floral designs in a country are culture and type of flower varieties readily available in the country. As such, the styles are as diverse as it can be. Hybrid styles have also been created over time to merge various styles.
Some of the common styles in existence today include ikebana, English garden, Dutch style, and European style. Ikebana floral design has its origin in Japan. Ikebana is known for being simplistic in its form and line. It is a style that is primarily practiced for personal enjoyment. It is composed of three parts of alignment, which represent heaven, man, and earth.
As implied by its name, English garden has its origin in the United Kingdom. This traditional style has been practiced for several decades in the country. Flowers and foliage used are seasonal while the placement is radial. They can be arranged into low tufted mounds or taller vase. Garden flowers such as roses, gardenia, delphinium, camellia and peonies are used in this style. Minimal spacing between blooms and foliage is observed.
Modern linear designs play a major part in present day European styles. It mainly focuses on the exclusive forms in the design and the floral material in general. The materials are arranged in an irregular pattern and arranged with a negative space. This style stands out from the traditional styles like the English style. This style is unique such that it offers an exclusive use of texture and the colors used match with the overall decoration of a place.
European style uses unique flowers which may be either exotic or tropical. Some of the flowers include, bird of paradise, protea of Caribbean, orchids and anthurium. This style may also combine exotic flowers with common blossom flowers like lilies, gerberas, and roses. This is a common style in popular events in Europe and countries like Germany and the USA.
Contemporary Dutch style use contemporary and linear designs too. It heavily employs various types of greens, which are used in a natural manner. Besides flowers, the designs in this style also employ mosses, barks, and stones. The style has its origin in the early 1980s.
