A person has to make a profile and do the upload of personal information so as to use online dating services. Employment, gender, location, appearance, and sexual orientation among the pieces of personal information needed. One is normally encouraged to give their photos or videos once they become members. An account becomes active once one has made their profile successfully. One can then have access to profiles and personal information of other individuals that have membership on the application or website. When a person develops interest in another member, they may contact them any time through digital messaging, which is commonly provided by many services. Some services go a step further to offer extra service to members, including access to online chat, telephone chat, message boards, and webcasts.
A person is able to connect with more than one person. Besides, a person can decide to meet a member in person or opt to restrict the communications to the online space. Meeting people from the internet in person usually happens as a blind date since the two parties usually do not know each other.
Currently, there is a big collection of online dating sites that exist. There are those indiscriminately accommodating people from every walk of life with no specifications whatsoever. But others are specific on the kind of people they expect as members. Normally, such services attempt to make sure their members share a certain common thing like interests, location, religion, and relationship type among many others.
For instance, there are many services that only accept Muslims. Thus, to join, one must be a Muslim even though there is no strict way of knowing if one is actually a Muslim or not. However, because the service advertises itself as being purely Islamic, it is assumed that all members are Muslims. The same goes for Christians and Hindus among other religions.
The revenue streams used by the various services usually vary. Some services offer free membership to anybody who wants to join. They only rely on advertising to make money. Others allow people to register and use the service for free, but to receive premium services, one has to pay an optional fee. Lastly, others charge everybody who wishes to register and use the service.
Online dating was greatly stigmatized when it initially emerged. People stigmatized against people who were members and the public hated the services as well. Those who were members did it secretly. That stigma has deteriorated over time, particularly as social media continues to grow more powerful.
