The number of divorce in Florida is increasing every year. This means that the divorce records of the state is also increasing making it more difficult and tedious to find such files on the archive. Divorce certificates re also a public document that the residents of Florida can access whenever they need it.

It is very sad to know that if the marriage of a couple is no longer healthy, they resolve to separation. Such emotional event has to be documented for it to be used it in legal transactions. These legal transactions includes, but not limited to the following: transactions that deals with the government such as insurance processes, background check, remarriage and genealogy. Without such document, a divorcee may not be able to update their insurance information. Conducting a background check on the marital status of an individual would need access to the divorce records as validation of the information. A divorcee would not be able to get married again if he/she cannot provide their divorce certificate. Although, it is rarely used in genealogy research, it still plays a vital role in the family history because it can create confusion to the future generations.

As we all know, divorce records are considered as public documents. Being a public document means that the information displayed to the public is already controlled and limited. One would only find the names of the couples who got separation along with the date and the place where it was granted. Other sensitive information about the separation is kept private including the reasons for the divorce and legal matters such as the custody of the children and the property division. This is done for the protection of both parties.

The state of Florida can only provide copies of divorce certificates which have been registered since June 6, 1927. A fee of $5 has to be paid if the year of the separation is known. If the year of divorce is not known, an additional $2 per year has to be given.

One should go to the Vital Records Section in the state of Florida in order to get a copy of the certificate that is dated from 1927. For records prior to the given year, it has to be obtained from the county clerk office. One can also send a mail request to the state office but this may take a while. To avoid the long wait time, one can look up the information through the Internet.
