After his birth, something strange happened which depicted him as a true man of God. Moses changed his name from Hosea to Joshua which means the Lord is Salvation. Among the Jews of that generation, only Caleb and him had a strong belief in God. They are the only ones who believed that God would rescuer them from the hands of the Egyptians and take them to the Promised Land.
The other person who is significant in this history, is Caleb who was the son of Jephunneh. Him together with Caleb are the only people among the Israelites then, who believed that through the help of God, they were able to conquer Canaan. As a result of the unfaithfulness of the other Jews, God sent them to the wilderness to wonder for 40 years. During the forty years in the wilderness, all those who did not believe in God died and only him and Caleb endured to the end. This was because of their faithfulness to God.
Moses then died before the Jews had reached the promise land. Therefore, there was a need for a need for a new leader to be chosen to succeed Moses in order to lead the Jews to the Promised Land. Joshua was therefore chosen as the successor of Moses. The Bible says that faithful obedience to God enabled him to grow from a slave to the leader of Israelites who led them to the Promised Land.
The soldiers were to go through river Jordan which was flooded at that time. He instructed the priests and the Leviticus to put the Ark of the Covenant in water and then the water stopped flowing. This enabled the soldiers to cross and to proceed with their fight.
While the Army of the Jews were going to fight Jericho, they got stacked at the shores of river Jordan. The river was flooded and that was the only way they were to follow in order to reach the land. Joshua after consulting God placed the Ark of the Covenant to the river and the river stopped flowing.
The army was then able to cross the river without any interference. This miracle was a manifestation of the power of God. At the city of Jericho, the soldiers went round the city six rounds for six days as instructed by God.
God had instructed that the soldiers should go round the city for six days before invading. They were also instructed to go round seven times on the seventh day before shouting. Under the command of Joshua, the soldiers followed the instruction and on the seventh day after shouting, the wall of the city feel down and they were able to conquer Jericho killing every one with an exception to the Rehab and her family. The other miracle performed by Joshua was making the sun to stand still until they won the battle of Gibeon. The history of Joshua is therefore significant in the life of the Israelites.
