There are many Christians that simply believe that going to church and reading the Bible is enough and it will do them justice. However, people who are more progressive in nature believe that there is more to the faith than this. They think that helping others will help make the world a better place. They are constantly focusing on this aspect as well.
The progressive Christian move away from the Biblical school of thought where one will provide food for the hungry, for example. Instead they believe in looking after the environment. They also want to make a different in the social justice system. Not all secular Christians believe that this is the way to go.
A Christian like this believes in God and Jesus and will not suddenly swap over to the Muslim faith where they only submit to their God. This is one aspect where the progressive Christian is different. They don't have a problem accepting all faiths. However, this can be a problem when they all mean different things. They believe that there are other ways to go through Jesus. According to the Bible there is only one way, so this is a new development.
For example, a lot of the Eastern faiths believe in God and not in Jesus, but this is the opposite in Christianity. One can't believe in both of these. There are different aspects involved in various religions, such as Judaism, which is very traditional and more religious in nature.
The average Christian is not supposed to judge faiths like Buddhism, for example. However one is supposed to follow your chosen faith and be dedicated to it. Progressive Christianity is saying that everything is true and therefore there are different Gods that you can follow. The true Christian only has one God that they are dedicating their life to and following like a friend. All Gods can't be right because they state different things in life.
One should follow a faith along with a basic guide. This movement doesn't go by the Bible and is more focused on social justice and the environment. It is still fairly new and one can see that they are experimenting with the way in which they handle certain things in the way in which they operate.
To be progressive in terms of what God would want for Christians, would be to be more like Jesus. This is what the goal is for a lot of Christians. Of course, it is impossible to achieve this, and one has to start afresh practically every day. However, as a Christian one is able to do this with the power of forgiveness.
