Compared to other fields, getting hired as a valet is not very demanding. The major requirement one is required to have is a valid driving license. A driver with a history of DUIs and reckless driving reduces their chances of getting hired. Therefore, a clean driving record is essential. Before one is hired by an establishment, a background check on the individual is run.
As such, having a clean criminal record also increases the chances of finding a job in this field. Being able to communicate fluently and effectively in English or whatever language is used in that location is every important. One must be able to communicate well with guests as they arrive and as they leave. Good communication skills should be coupled with good customer service skills.
Professionalism is important in this job. Keeping a professional appearance and attitude is important while working a shift because valets are the brand and image of the business. The behavior of valets in a business helps to lower or improve the image and ratings of a business.
Work hours in this field are usually very flexible, but one can be sure of working for long hours. Depending on the location, there is usually the night shift and the day shift. A day may have one to three shifts, and each shift may be as long as 8 hours. Workers are usually expected to work on holidays and weekends. Given the long working hours, one needs to be physically fit to handle the physical stress the job entails.
A basic high school diploma is the core academic requirement since this field has a low demand rate, but this can be substituted for an equivalent qualification. Basic computer skills also come in handy in this job. Proper handling of various pieces of equipment in the job is also sort after.
Work responsibilities of valets vary from one employer to another. However, basically, these workers work at the front door of a building. Usually, they open the main doors to guests and assist them to enter and to leave the property. They also assist guests to open and close vehicle doors. For this, these workers are usually tipped by guests. Some create personal relationships with frequent guests.
It is part of their job to welcome the guests, greet them in the right manner according to the time of they have arrived and the season. If a guest comes in driving a car it is their responsibility to help the guest park their car. After they have the car for the guest, they tag the car keys with the contact number of the guest, the registration number of the vehicle, date and time the car was parked. The room number the guest has been booked is also added to the tagged information. This is necessary to prevent theft and for easy to retrieval of the car.
