In the olden days, all the agreements made between man and the almighty God was based on tangible promises. God spoke to the children of Israel that they would be His treasure if they obeyed Him and kept his commands. The whole world belongs to God, which means that the children of Israel would be a holy nation and a royal priesthood to God.
According to the agreement between God and the children of Israel, circumcision was physical. In the book of Genesis, God talked to Abraham and told Him that He would have to keep an agreement with Him to circumcise all the male persons in his household. God told Moses that any alien who wanted to take part in the Passover feast must be ready to circumcise all the male members of his households before taking part in the Passover feast.
The spirit of the Lord had not come upon people because God had not yet sent the Holy Spirit to be with His people. The Lord made rules and gave them to Moses to give people and these are the exact rules that would be main in the olden days in the nation of Israel and beyond. Anyone who failed to obey these laws would be sinning against God.
There was completely a different way to ask for the forgiveness of sins compared to how the church does it now. If someone made a mistake, they would make a sacrifice to God and them God would forgive their sins. They would make a sacrifice through Priests and the Levi to have their sins atoned for in the presence of God.
The new covenant is a different one and right from the moment Christ stepped foot on the earth to the time He left, everything happened in a different way. You need to remember that the covenant between God and man here is spiritual. God loved the world so much that he decided that He would redeem many from their sins. The only way to do this was to give his only son to die for the sins of many.
In the current agreement between God and man, a true believer has the spirit of God. The spirit of God is the Holy Spirit whom God sent to the earth after Jesus ascended to heaven. The Holy Spirit would guide the church, remind Christians what Christ taught them and direct them in the right path.
You no longer need to make sacrifices to ask for the forgiveness of sins. Jesus already made a love sacrifice on the cross so that your sins could be forgiven.
