Keep moisturizer products for daily use. It is important to keep skin moisturized, and avoid dry and easy to tear skin. While moisturizing the skin it is a good idea to do a thorough check over the skin, and make documentation when questionable areas are discovered. If the spots continue to redden or irritation is felt in the area seek medical attention for the individual.
Find different activities that you enjoy and make an effort to participate in them. Volunteer your services to others, this does wonders for the self-esteem. There is nothing like a dose of reality make you thankful your situation. Getting out and being around others is a great way to meet new people and get involved in the community.
Reduce the stress in your life. If you cannot eliminate it completely, it is important to decrease it as much as possible. You do not want stress, and definitely do not need it in your life. It takes a toll on your, emotional, and even physical well-being. Keep your stress limited as much as possible.
Consider bringing in a home care aide to help for your loved one. Aides are trained to care for individuals who are at risks of developing bedsores. They are also trained to recognize problematic areas and further discuss it with health providers, or family members. Home health aides can occupancy the senior to doctors appointments and can discuss any problems that they have been witnessing with the patient. They can also take notes to share with the family member caregiver after the appointment or just things that they have been noticing while caring for the senior.
Seniors like to refer to their help as companions or friends. Refer to them as that when having the conversation with your loved one. Let them know a friend will be helping them out during the day with some of the things that are difficult for them. Seniors are usually happy to know that they can go on resuming their life as normal just with a little added help and security where it is in home or transitioning to a senior living location.
There is nothing wrong with hiring home aides to help care for a loved one. Your seniors health and well being should always be among the first things when taking care of them. Aides can pay close attention to the persons appearance, skin and their general health care.
If you decide to keep the aide during this time the person can be brought on to work with the family member full-time. However, if the aide does not work out for them, they then have the opportunity to try someone new. It is difficult for most seniors to accept the fact that in order for them to remain at home they will need assistance.
