Ask about their experiences. Inquire how long have the individual been doing the service and how many jobs have they taken so far since the beginning of their establishment. Discuss about the capabilities and specialties. Length in this business and if they have testified or deposed in court. Experienced people already know where to begin their search and have the right tools to finish the job.
Insurance. Check if the PI have insurances. This will protect clients if something happens to them or the detective. The investigation may have deadly consequences so having insurances is an advantage. Most states require a detective to have insurance especially if they carry a legal firearm. Insurances are mean of protection in case something happen to the PI during an investigation.
Begin the search. If the reason for hiring them is already cleared, begin the search. Inquire some people who have hired a PI in the past. If there are no leads on that area, look through phonebooks, word of mouth or by the internet. If a few names pop up, check out their websites to know what kind of services they offer and what area they specialize.
Keep in mind how the detective interacts with you during meetings, presentation of information and interviews. Professionalism is very important especially when handling with difficult cases. The detectives must have a private office where both parties can talk privately. That way, both parties can reach a certain agreement and talk about the fees and the confidentiality of the case.
Schedule more meetings for follow up. If the person is already comfortable with the investigator, they can set up for a follow up meeting. This is no longer a simple interview or consultation but it should be more thoroughly. Everything has to be handed down on the detective during this meeting.
If the clients wats someone to be followed, they should provide the picture of that person, places where they hangout, current address if possible, schedules and vehicles. If this is your first time meeting with them, do not be intimated and offer them as mush data as needed. The detectives will inquire more data if they need it.
Get referrals from your loved ones and friends. They may know some companies or individuals that are in this business. Perhaps they may have even hired someone before. They can share their experiences and insights that will make you understand the whole concept.
Price is always the issue. Individuals should have the finances when choosing an investigator. It is important to have the finances ready before signing the contract.
